"In 1999, after 9 years of civil war, we began hearing news that there was progress towards a peaceful negotiation to end the civil war in Sierra Leone.  Because of our faith in God and our belief that God answer prayers we decided to hold a Thanksgiving Service to give thanks to God for the progress Sierra Leone was making in bringing the war to an end. Therefore, on Sunday, October 3rd, 1999, we held our first Thanksgiving Service and the preacher was Rev. Aaron Madondo.  It was decided after the service that the offering, which was $1200, be used to start a scholarship fund for needy secondary school students in Sierra Leone. The association knew that the one main reason the rebel leaders were able to prolong the war was illiteracy.  Rebel leaders were able to fuel the war by playing on the ignorance of youth and convincing them to fight and carry out senseless atrocities against innocent civilians.  With education, the association hopes that in the future educated youths will be better equipped and able to voice their opinion and dissatisfaction, not with guns but with words. To this end, and with the support of Grace Church members, we have continued the scholarship fund and have assisted more than 25 students in completing their secondary education and also a college student in completing his degree in medicine. This student is now a practicing medical doctor."  ~Prince Thomas

This is our second Monthly Potluck Supper.  Everyone is invited!
