We will meet every Thursday during Advent for this book study
Christmas is coming--and we Episcopalians have the opportunity to prepare for it by using the season of Advent to reflect on the coming Incarnation. The Stewardship Team is sponsoring a book study on Thursday evenings during Advent to help us focus on “the reason for the season.”
The book selected for this study is Advent and Christmas Wisdom from G. K Chesterton. Each day’s reading consists of a short selection from Chesterton, a Bible verse, a prayer and an “Advent Action.” Chesterton has been called a Christian cultural critic in the tradition of the English “man of letters.” Although the readings are simpler and less demanding than those we read for our Lenten study this past year, Chesterton’s humor and intellect quickly focus the reader’s attention and thoughts on the spiritual importance of this special time of year.
Chesterton wrote, “People are losing the power to enjoy Christmas though identifying it with enjoyment.” Today we tend to think more of stress of the busy holiday season. You may wonder how you have time to add yet one more activity; this book may be exactly what you need to add the right amount of spirituality and reflection on “the reason for the season” to your schedule.
Each Thursday evening we will gather at 5:30 in the parish hall for a light supper of hearty soup and bread, followed at 6:00 for discussion of the week’s reading. At 7:00 we will gather in the chapel to close the evening with Compline.
A sign-up sheet will be posted in the narthex. Please indicate if you want us to order a book for you; the cost is $10. It is also available for Kindle and Nook e-readers.
We encourage all of you to enrich your Advent with thoughtful daily study.
