A JOURNEY BEGINS WITH A SINGLE STEP

Lohman Prayer Garden began with an Eagle project

In 2003, a sign was placed at the Jefferson Street Salvation Army entrance reading, “Future home of Lohman Prayer Gardens”.  We drove by that sign every Sunday on the way to church.  Nick Turner, member of Grace Church, was looking for an idea for his Eagle Scout project.  He met with Major Ben Stillwell of the Salvation Army with an idea.  After the meeting, Nick designed and, with the help of his fellow scouts, built the two crosses at the entrance to the Salvation Army.  Parishioners donated flowers and plants.  These crosses can be seen when traveling Jefferson Street from either direction.  It was the first step.

A few years later, the Community Ministry committee took the next step and designed, then built, the beautiful Prayer Garden.  They “spruced” up the crosses.  Later, the playground was added.

Recently another step was taken when the young children of our church re-planted flowers in the crosses.

The journey is not finished.  It continues with members of Grace mentoring at the shelter, helping residents plant and nurture a vegetable garden, and fixing monthly meals for the residents.

What a wonderful journey we are on!!!  With members of our church, from young to mature, I hope this journey continues and brings hope and peace to all who enjoy this one bright spot in a sometimes bleak world in which we live.
