New Mass Celebrates Absalom Jones Sunday
Mass by Robert Mitchell based on African American musical themes
A marvelous organ “Prelude” composed by Robert Mitchell and performed by Beth Eckles opened the 10:30 Eucharist on Sunday, February 14, 2010, and set out the musical themes of Mitchell’s new Mass based on African American musical traditions. The choir and congregation joined in the Processional Hymn, “Lift Every Voice and Sing” and set a jubilant tone for the celebration of Absalom Jones Sunday, commemorating the first African American Episcopal priest. For the Mass, Mitchell composed new settings of the “Gloria,” “Doxology,” “Sanctus,” and “Benedictus.” The choir, under the direction of Karel Lowery, was outstanding on Mitchell’s arrangements of “There is a Balm in Gilead” and “Go Down Moses,” dealing with the intricate harmonies with style and assurance. The choir was accompanied by the composer on piano, Eckles on organ, and a quintet that included Grace’s Jay Ludewig on guitar. Mitchell’s music was a joyous addition to a wonderful celebration of the Eucharist.
