Winter Clothing Drive a Big Success

by Ken Luebbering last modified Wed Feb 10 11:48 AM

Drive exceeds all expectations

First reports from the Salvation Army on the recent downtown winter clothing and blanket drive indicated that the donated goods filled a truck and a half.  With about two-thirds of the donations from six of the seven downtown churches now sorted, the Salvation Army estimates that these six churches have contributed approximately 200 blankets; 1,500 coats; 150 assorted hats, gloves, and scarves; 50 pairs of shoes; and 300 items of other clothing (e.g., sweaters, jeans, shirts, etc.)  While the vast majority of these items will be given directly to individuals in need, a spokesperson said that one way to value the contributions would be what they could be sold for in the Thrift Shop.  A conservative estimate, she said, would be $9,000-$9,300.

She noted that typically 40-50% of clothing donations are not in sufficiently good condition to be re-used.  The poorer quality goods are recycled, which brings in some income, but that doesn’t help as much better clothing.  The items donated in this drive, she said, were of such consistently high quality that only 5-10% would not be usable.  She commented that she had never seen such high-quality donations, and that the drive had been one of the smoothest ever.

Thanks to Jeanie Bryant and her Community Ministry team for coordinating Grace’s contributions, and to everyone who responded to the need.  Many fewer persons in our community will be cold this winter because of your generosity.  Together we can do so much more than we can individually.

If you have additional clothing you wish to donate, you may always take items to the Salvation Army Thrift Store, 718 Michigan Ave.
